Construct 2

by Alicia Fortier

What:

This workshop is going to cover the fundamentals of making a 2D game in Construct 2, with no prior knowledge of game making or programming needed!

You will learn how to:

  • Create Characters & Animations
  • Create Levels
  • Use Built in Construct 2 Behaviors for movements, collisions, and other gameplay essentials
  • Use logic to have win and loss conditions

After this workshop, you’ll be familiar with the Construct 2 interfaces & terminology and have a simple game example that you can build on to make your own game. With the basics behind you, it’ll also be a lot easier to keep learning Construct 2 on your won! There are lots of online tutorials and resources to keep learning with.

About Construct 2:

Construct 2 is an HTML5-based 2D game editor, developed by Scirra. It is aimed primarily at non-programmers, allowing quick creation of games (perfectly suited for game jam) in a drag-and-drop fashion using a visual editor and a behavior-based logic system.

When/Where:

The workshop will be taking place on Friday, October 27th from 6 PM – 8 PM in 11.425 at the EV building of Concordia University (metro Guy-Concordia) (NB: We may change rooms depending on the size of the group).

Participants must bring:

Please Note:

Unfortunately, Construct 2 is a PC-only software, and we highly recommend that you borrow one for this workshop. We will be installing the free version of the program on the Atelier’s computers but availability is, of course, limited. If you have a Mac with a Windows partition it might install properly, or you can try running it in Virtual Box using these old instructions.

About the workshop leader:

Alicia FORTIER is a Game Designer working on For Honor at Ubisoft Montreal for the last 3 years. She’s participated in over 10 game jams and loves the thrill of creating something from scratch in such a small period of time. She has given workshops on Construct 2 and UI desing for Pixelles and Youth Fusion, ran a 2 week long game design day camp. In her free time, she likes to tinker with Aduinos and is playing FF8 for the first time ever. (no spoilers)

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with her, especially if you need help with Construct 2, Processing, Scoping for a Game Jam, Game Design, UI advice, or just someone to play your game and give you feedback.
