East meets West:
Video game development in Canada and Japan

Featuring guest speaker Atsuo Nakayama from Bandai Namco in Vancouver and our own Mia Consalvo from Concordia University. This will be a great opportunity to get some comparative insight into our game development scenes and to push the boundaries of the discussion about the shapes and cultures of the game industry.

Atsuo Nakayama is Studio Head, Executive Vice President of Bandai Namco Studios (Vancouver) handles mobile business in the North American market, backed by his strong track record as a marketer at DeNA and a tech/media industry consultant at Deloitte. He is also the author of three published books including the recently released, The Third Wave of Japanese Games. He holds an MBA from McGill University. He tweets at @atsuonakayama.

Mia Consalvo is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Game Studies and Design at Concordia University in Montreal. She is the co-editor of Sports Videogames and author of Cheating: Gaining Advantage in Videogames. She has most recently completed the book Players and Their Pets with Jason Begy and is now finishing Japan’s Videogames, a book about Japan’s influence on the videogame industry and game culture
